The challenge of this former public house site was to satisfy two seemingly irreconcilable demands - to create a landmark, appropriate for its prominent urban context, and a building which is quiet and sensitively domestic. The solution is a striking structure of tight footprint and tall concrete frame. The high, visible structure gives the building a monolithic urban presence, while the black fiber C and glass in-fills bring a human scale to the facade. The tall windows show off the spectacular corner position of the site with its long views across the borough. The all glass penthouse, immersed into its surroundings by transparency and reflection, has commanding views of London over its triple aspect terraces. |
