DEVELOPMENTS - Long Walk, London, SE1

An innovative and contemporary design was developed to respond to a historically sensitive location and the cultural heritage of Bermondsey Square.

The project rises above the immediate context of sub-urban pattern book 1980's housing to give a unique compact building responding to the Victorian past and contemporary urban vernacular of the present.

The flats are designed to maximise sunlight into each space and the size of each room, reducing the corridors to a minimum. Each flat has a terrace or balcony in cantilevered structural glass which also form canopies to the entrances below. The kitchens are designed with free flowing work surfaces folding to become dining benches and structurally glazed back splashes giving views across Tower Bridge Road.

The sustainable solid timber frame construction creates a structural skin which enables windows to cut through the corners allowing views to pass through the building. It is clad in brick and glass giving a distinct character of contrast - the dark brick absorbing the light and the opal glass reflecting the clouds and the sun. The panoramic sunbathed roof terrace to the penthouse flat commands views across Bermondsey to Tower Bridge.
